Zoomlion DV3504 Hybrid Tractor

Zoomlion DV3504 Hybrid Tractor Earns Two Tractor of the Year 2027 Nominations

Zoomlion’s DV3504 hybrid tractor has been nominated in two categories of the Tractor of the Year 2027 awards, putting the Chinese manufacturer’s high-horsepower hybrid platform into one of the agricultural machinery industry’s most closely watched international competitions.

The DV3504 has been shortlisted for both the HighPower category, covering tractors of 300 hp and above, and Sustainable TOTY. According to the award announcement, 23 tractors from 18 global brands entered the 2027 competition, with evaluation carried out by 26 independent agricultural machinery journalists representing 25 countries.

The nomination follows the DV3504’s international debut at Agritechnica 2025 in Hanover, where Zoomlion positioned the tractor as the flagship of its emerging hybrid agricultural machinery lineup.

Zoomlion DV3504 Hybrid Power

At the center of the DV3504 is Zoomlion’s internally developed MiDD, or Meshed intelligent Direct Drive, hybrid drivetrain.

The tractor is rated at 350 hp and uses a multi-motor direct-drive architecture rather than relying on a conventional mechanical transmission layout. Zoomlion says the system independently distributes power to propulsion, PTO and hydraulic functions. This arrangement allows stepless operation while reducing the number of mechanical transmission components by approximately 70%.

That drivetrain architecture is arguably more significant than the headline horsepower figure.

High-horsepower tractors typically spend long periods operating close to maximum load during primary tillage, deep cultivation and heavy towing. Full battery-electric propulsion remains difficult in this segment because the energy storage required for an entire working day can become extremely large and heavy. A hybrid architecture gives manufacturers another route: retain the energy density and refueling speed of liquid fuel while using electric drive to improve power delivery and drivetrain control.

That is precisely the territory Zoomlion is attempting to occupy with the DV Series.

119 kN Traction and 227 L/min Hydraulics

Zoomlion lists maximum traction capability of 119 kN for the DV3504, giving the tractor the pulling performance required for large tillage implements and heavy draft applications.

Hydraulic output reaches 227 L/min, placing the tractor firmly in the high-capacity category needed for modern wide implements with substantial hydraulic demand.

Zoomlion also promotes an 8,800 kg rear lifting capacity for the DV3504, further reinforcing its intended role as a large-scale field tractor rather than simply a technology demonstrator.

The manufacturer’s international product information also describes stepless travel from 0 to 40 km/h, another advantage of the electrically managed drivetrain architecture.

DV3504 Built for Large Farms

The DV3504 has been developed primarily around large-area dryland farming, where a tractor may spend many hours continuously pulling heavy implements.

This is an important distinction because hybrid technology offers different benefits in agricultural machinery than it does in passenger vehicles.

There are comparatively few opportunities for regenerative braking during steady field cultivation. The larger potential advantage comes from operating the combustion engine closer to efficient load points while electric motors manage torque delivery and individual machine functions.

Separating propulsion, hydraulics and PTO power can also create substantially more flexibility for future tractor development. Instead of forcing every function through the traditional engine, gearbox and mechanical driveline sequence, engineers can control where power is generated and where it is consumed.

For high-horsepower tractors, that could eventually become one of the most important consequences of electrification.

Autonomous Farming Technology

Zoomlion is also positioning the DV3504 as part of a broader intelligent farming platform.

At Agritechnica 2025, the company demonstrated a DV3504 carrying out autonomous harrowing operations using its Zpilot Pro system. The tractor automatically generated working paths, performed multiple turning strategies including X-turns and maintained centimeter-level positioning using sensor fusion and high-precision positioning technology.

That combination matters because future premium tractors are increasingly likely to be judged not simply by engine power but by how effectively propulsion, implement control, guidance and farm-management software work together.

A hybrid electric drivetrain potentially makes that integration easier because electronically controlled torque can be managed more precisely than power traveling exclusively through mechanical systems.

Why the TOTY Nomination Matters

The Tractor of the Year nomination should not be interpreted as evidence that hybrid tractors have already solved the economic challenges facing high-horsepower agricultural electrification.

Purchase price, long-term reliability, battery durability, service infrastructure and real-world fuel savings will ultimately matter much more to farmers than awards.

However, the DV3504 is notable because it represents something larger than another 350 hp tractor entering an already crowded market.

For decades, the global high-horsepower tractor segment has been dominated by established European and North American manufacturers. Zoomlion is attempting to enter that competition with a drivetrain architecture that is fundamentally different from the conventional powershift and continuously variable transmissions used by most incumbents.

Its dual TOTY nomination therefore gives the DV3504 technical credibility at an unusually important stage in Zoomlion’s international agricultural expansion.

The strongest aspect of the machine may ultimately be the MiDD architecture rather than its hybrid label. Removing a large portion of the traditional mechanical drivetrain could create advantages in packaging, controllability and potentially maintenance. But those benefits will only become convincing once significant numbers of tractors accumulate thousands of operating hours under commercial farming conditions.

For that reason, the next stage of the DV3504 story will be more important than the nomination itself.
