TAFE Motors and Tractors Limited (TMTL), a subsidiary of India’s Tractors and Farm Equipment Limited (TAFE), has officially opened a new DEUTZ engine manufacturing facility at its Alwar production complex in Rajasthan. The launch marks the first industrial manufacturing partnership between TAFE Motors and the German engine specialist DEUTZ AG and represents an important step in expanding localized production of modern diesel engines for both Indian and export markets.
DEUTZ licensed engine production
The newly commissioned plant will manufacture DEUTZ licensed 2.2 liter and 2.9 liter diesel engines under a long term licensing agreement. Initial annual capacity has been set at 35,000 complete engines together with 50,000 sub assemblies, giving the facility significant room to supply multiple equipment manufacturers while supporting future production growth.
Rather than functioning as a conventional assembly line, the factory has been designed around Industry 4.0 manufacturing principles. Production is fully integrated through a Manufacturing Execution System (MES), allowing digital monitoring, traceability, and process control throughout machining, assembly, testing, and logistics.
According to TAFE, the project is intended to strengthen both domestic engine production and exports while increasing manufacturing efficiency and maintaining global quality standards.
Industry 4.0 manufacturing
One of the most notable aspects of the new facility is its high level of automation. The production process incorporates robotics, collaborative robots, machine vision systems, automated logistics, and digitally connected quality inspection.
The factory also includes a dedicated engine testing center and an advanced quality laboratory capable of providing complete digital traceability for every engine produced. Such infrastructure has become increasingly important as emissions regulations tighten and OEM customers demand consistent manufacturing documentation across global supply chains.
Beyond technology, TAFE highlighted another aspect of the project: approximately 40% of the workforce at the new plant consists of women, reflecting the company’s broader workforce development strategy.
Expanding global engine manufacturing
The investment forms part of TAFE’s wider manufacturing expansion plans. Together with the Amalgamations Group, the company expects its combined annual engine manufacturing capacity to grow from approximately 400,000 engines today to around 550,000 engines by 2030.
For DEUTZ, the Alwar facility expands its manufacturing footprint beyond Europe while allowing the company to better serve rapidly growing Asian and international markets through local production.
The plant was officially inaugurated by Rajasthan’s Minister for Industry and Commerce, Colonel Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, alongside senior executives from both companies.

It reflects a broader shift taking place across the global off highway equipment industry, where European engine manufacturers are increasingly partnering with regional industrial leaders to build localized production ecosystems.

For TAFE, producing proven German engine platforms locally enhances its technological capabilities and creates opportunities to supply not only its own equipment but also other OEM customers worldwide.
