Seederal Unveils First Purpose Built 160 HP Electric Tractor Prototype

French agricultural technology startup Seederal has revealed the first image of its fully in house developed 160 hp electric tractor, marking an important milestone in the company’s transition from concept testing to proprietary vehicle development. Unlike the firm’s earlier demonstrator, which was built around a modified JCB Fastrac platform, the new prototype has been engineered from the ground up as a dedicated battery electric tractor.

The machine was assembled at Seederal’s newly opened production workshop in Guipavas, Brittany, where the company plans to continue development and validation before commercial production.

Purpose built electric platform

The newly unveiled tractor represents Seederal’s first clean sheet design rather than an adaptation of an existing diesel model. While the company has not yet released detailed specifications, the prototype reflects several years of engineering work that began after extensive testing with its previous JCB Fastrac based demonstrator.

By designing its own chassis, drivetrain, and battery integration, Seederal aims to optimize weight distribution, structural rigidity, and energy efficiency instead of working around the packaging limitations of a conventional tractor platform.

The company has not disclosed the tractor’s operating weight, hydraulic output, PTO power rating, maximum speed, battery capacity, or peak electric motor specifications.

Battery designed for agriculture

One of the most significant aspects of the project is Seederal’s proprietary battery system. Rather than sourcing battery packs from the automotive industry, the company developed a battery specifically for agricultural applications.

According to Seederal, the battery is engineered to withstand repeated heavy load cycles commonly encountered during field operations while offering a longer service life than conventional battery systems.

The company estimates up to eight hours of operating time, depending on workload and operating conditions.

Charging options currently include:

  • Fast charging from 0 to 100% in approximately 2 hours.
  • Standard charging requiring roughly 8 to 10 hours.

The actual charging infrastructure requirements and battery capacity have not yet been published.

Carraro developed drivetrain

Seederal partnered with Italian drivetrain specialist Carraro to develop the tractor’s powertrain.

One of the key engineering features is the newly developed Independent Front Unit, a front axle jointly engineered by Seederal and Carraro. The system is intended to improve vehicle stability on uneven terrain while reducing vibration transmitted to the operator during transport and field work.

The tractor also features permanent traction management across all four wheels, allowing electric torque to be distributed continuously to maximize grip while minimizing wheel slip.

Although Seederal has not released technical details regarding axle motors, differential configuration, or torque figures, electric drivetrains can react significantly faster than conventional mechanical systems because torque distribution is controlled electronically rather than through mechanical engagement.

Michelin supports traction development

Seederal is also collaborating with Michelin to optimize how electric motor torque is transferred to the ground.

Electric tractors generate maximum torque immediately from zero rpm, creating different traction characteristics than diesel powered machines. Tire construction, inflation strategy, and contact patch behavior become increasingly important in managing that instantaneous torque while reducing soil compaction and tire wear.

The partnership suggests that Seederal is focusing not only on electrification but also on maximizing field efficiency under real operating conditions.

Compatible with existing implements

Rather than requiring specialized equipment, the tractor is designed to work with conventional farm implements.

According to the company, implements can be powered through:

  • Standard PTO.
  • Hydraulic services.
  • Electric power outlets.

The prototype also incorporates advanced driver assistance functions together with implement management systems, although Seederal has not yet disclosed specific automation capabilities or precision agriculture features.

Development continues

The tractor remains in the prototype phase, and Seederal says additional engineering refinement is still required before production begins.

Pricing, commercial availability, production volumes, and certification timelines have not yet been announced.

Based on the information currently available, the company appears focused on validating durability, battery longevity, and real world agricultural performance before entering the market.

From a technical perspective, Seederal’s approach differs from many early electric tractor projects by designing both the vehicle architecture and battery specifically for agricultural workloads instead of adapting existing industrial or automotive electric platforms. That strategy requires greater engineering investment but could ultimately deliver a machine better suited to demanding field operations where continuous high torque, long operating cycles, and durability are essential.
