September 1, 2025 | Urbana-Champaign, Ill. — Farmers and custom operators now have fresh benchmarks for planning their machinery budgets. A new report from agricultural economists Dale Lattz and Gary Schnitkey at the University of Illinois provides detailed 2025 cost estimates for tractors ranging from 85 to 640 horsepower.
The analysis covers all major cost components — depreciation, interest, insurance, housing, repairs, fuel, and labor — making it a practical tool for estimating machinery ownership expenses, determining rental rates, or setting custom operation charges.
The report stresses that the figures represent costs only, not profits. Operators charging custom rates are advised to add 5 – 15 percent above the estimates to ensure profitability.
Key Findings
Higher horsepower means higher per-hour costs. For example, an 85 PTO horsepower tractor comes in at about $101.30 per hour, while a 640-hp model pushes costs up to $350 per hour.
Fuel assumptions: Diesel priced at $3.00 per gallon, with fuel use rising sharply with tractor size.
Labor costs: Set at $22 per hour, with an assumption that labor time is 10% greater than machine operating time.
Depreciation & interest: These fixed costs weigh heavily on per-hour expenses, particularly for tractors with lower annual use hours.
The estimates are based on tractors operated 300 hours per year over a 10-year lifespan, using formulas from the American Society of Agricultural Engineers (ASAE).

Why It Matters
For farm managers, the 2025 estimates help sharpen cost-of-production budgets at a time when fuel, labor, and machinery investments remain volatile. For custom operators, the report provides a defensible baseline for negotiating rates with customers.
As machinery prices continue to rise, this annual benchmark remains a critical tool for farm business planning.
