Biomethane Powered Tractor Earns Top ESG Innovation Honors
New Holland Agriculture has been awarded Brazil’s prestigious ESG Award in the category Technological Innovation in ESG for its T6.180 Methane Power tractor. The accolade, presented by the Brazilian ESG Association, recognizes the model’s pioneering biomethane propulsion system, which converts organic waste into a clean, renewable fuel source.
The T6.180 Methane Power is the world’s first commercially available agricultural tractor powered entirely by biomethane, offering farmers a sustainable alternative that maintains the performance and autonomy of a comparable diesel model.
Biomethane Technology Delivers Strong Emission Reduction
Since initiating its alternative fuels strategy in 2006, New Holland has developed machinery capable of operating on biodiesel, hydrogen, and methane. The breakthrough came with the first methane powered prototype in 2013, leading to the commercial release of the T6.180 Methane Power in 2022 for the Brazilian market.
The environmental benefits are substantial. Biomethane propulsion reduces regulated pollutants by up to 80 percent and CO2 emissions by up to 84 percent versus a conventional diesel engine. Operational savings are equally compelling, with fuel cost reductions estimated between 25 and 40 percent depending on usage conditions.
Energy Independent Farm Concept Expands Sustainable Use Cases
In 2023, New Holland advanced its long term sustainability vision by introducing the Energy Independent Farm concept in collaboration with leading biomethane sector partners. The model integrates a biodigester, gas purification system, generator, tractors, and heavy vehicles into a closed loop ecosystem that transforms animal waste into usable biogas.
This on farm production cycle enables growers to generate their own clean fuel, shield their operations from fossil fuel price volatility, lower operating costs, and increase long term energy security. The approach also supports responsible waste management and strengthens sustainability credentials across the entire operation.
