At Agritechnica 2025, New Holland introduced the R4 series of autonomous agricultural robots, a breakthrough concept designed to tackle the challenges faced by vineyard and orchard operators — from labor shortages to the demand for greener production methods. Developed by CNH’s R&D centers in Modena, Italy and Coëx, France, the R4 line represents the brand’s next leap in specialty crop automation.
R4 Electric Power: Compact Zero-Emission Robot for Narrow Vineyards
The R4 Electric Power is purpose-built for high-value vineyards with narrow rows. Powered by a 40 kWh lithium battery, it operates fully electrically with zero emissions.
Standing just 1.38 m high and 0.7 m wide, it weighs around 1 ton and can work in 1.0–1.5 m row spacing.
A specially engineered rear linkage supports implements up to 500 kg, while an electric PTO system drives compatible attachments without hydraulic oil—reducing maintenance and environmental impact.
R4 Hybrid Power: Diesel-Electric Versatility for Fruit Orchards
Designed for larger orchards, the R4 Hybrid Power combines a 59 hp (44 kW) diesel engine compatible with HVO biofuel and an electric generator that powers both propulsion and implements.
With a weight of 1,400 kg and a width of 1.2 m, it fits row spacings from 1.5 m upward. Two 4 kWh batteries enable quiet, fully electric operation when needed, and the 48 V/12 kW e-PTO readies the robot for future electric implements.
The smart 540 rpm mechanical PTO features progressive engagement for conventional tools, while intelligent transmission and track drive minimize soil compaction.
Smart Implement Control and Precision Spraying
Both R4 versions use GPS, LIDAR, and multi-camera systems for autonomous navigation, managed remotely through a mobile app.
Smart implement control allows automation of spray rate, canopy-height detection, and turn-zone management. Future updates aim to integrate disease-targeted spraying via real-time plant analysis, significantly cutting chemical use and operator exposure.
Sustainable Automation for Specialty Crop Farmers
New Holland’s goal is to deliver machines that require only remote supervision, freeing human operators for higher-value work. Built from proven CNH components, the R4 Electric and Hybrid Power models provide farmers with a future-proof solution that reduces ownership costs and environmental impact.
