New Case IH Optum Tractors Strengthen Hughes Contracting’s Expanding Southland Fleet

For Southland-based Hughes Contracting, a shift from diesel mechanic work to agricultural contracting in 1986 set the stage for one of the region’s most enduring success stories. Founded by Brian Hughes with a single Case IH tractor, the company has grown into a 50-person operation managing a fleet of 30 tractors and a wide range of agricultural equipment — from balers and harvesters to trucks and loaders.

Today, Hughes Contracting operates from depots in Waimatua and Browns, offering full-service solutions across cultivation, planting, silage and baleage, feed supply, cartage, excavation, and effluent disposal. The business remains a cornerstone of Southland’s contracting sector, now led by Brian’s son, Chris Hughes.

Case IH Optum 300 Joins the Lineup for Greater Efficiency

The company recently expanded its fleet with two new Case IH Optum 300 tractors, continuing its long partnership with local dealer Agricentre South in Invercargill. According to Brian Hughes, the Optum lineup strikes the perfect balance between power and versatility.

“The Optums have the muscle for heavy work yet remain flexible for everyday operations,” he explained. “The new units will primarily handle grass mowing with 10-meter mowers — there’s no shortage of work for them.”

Smart Farming: Precision and Comfort Redefined

Over four decades, Hughes has witnessed major technological leaps in agricultural machinery. He highlights cab comfort, noise reduction, and fuel efficiency as standout improvements — especially with CVT transmissions optimizing fuel use across a large fleet.

Chris Hughes also emphasizes the benefits of precision agriculture, noting that half of their tractors now use Case IH AccuGuide™ for automated, hands-free steering. “GPS optimization delivers higher accuracy and lower fuel costs. It’s made a measurable impact on our productivity,” he said.

FieldOps Integration Elevates Fleet Management

Agricentre South Sales Manager Richard Clapperton revealed that Hughes Contracting’s entire fleet is being connected through Case IH FieldOps™. The digital platform integrates agronomic insights and machine performance data in real time, giving both the contractor and dealer full operational visibility.

“This system provides live machine locations, performance metrics, and proof of application for slurry and fertilizer,” Clapperton explained. “It also helps us schedule maintenance and respond to alerts faster.”

Looking Ahead to a Strong Season

Following a favorable winter, the Hughes team is preparing for a productive season ahead — and the new Optum 300s are set to play a key role.

After 40 years in business, the combination of hands-on experience, trusted Case IH technology, and smart connectivity continues to keep Hughes Contracting at the forefront of Southland’s agricultural contracting industry.
