Electric tractor manufacturer Zimeno Inc., known commercially as Monarch Tractor, has cut 102 jobs across two Livermore facilities, according to WARN filings submitted to California’s Employment Development Department. The layoffs, completed on November 19, affected positions at the company’s main office on Lawrence Drive and its testing grounds at Wente Vineyards on Tesla Road.
The company stated that the reductions are permanent.
Shift Toward Software as Core Business Strategy
The workforce cuts come as Monarch redirects focus from hardware-intensive autonomy toward a broader software platform designed for OEMs. The company has promoted its AI based system as a tool that allows manufacturers to develop smarter machinery and vehicles by integrating advanced computing, data management, and autonomy features. Monarch intends to license this platform across multiple industries, expanding beyond agriculture.
Dealer Lawsuit Questions Autonomy Capabilities
The restructuring follows recent litigation involving Burks Tractor Co. of Idaho. The dealer claims it purchased 10 Monarch tractors for roughly $773,100 under the understanding that all units operated autonomously. Court filings indicate that Burks Tractor was later informed that the tractors could not function autonomously indoors and had more limited capabilities than expected.
Monarch has acknowledged the sale but denied wrongdoing, stating it markets the model as “driver optional” rather than fully autonomous. The case, initially filed in state court, has been moved to federal court.
Regional Employment Trends Underscore Industry Pressure
The news surfaces during a challenging year for the Bay Area labor market, which shed 7,200 jobs compared to August last year. While California posted modest overall job growth, the statewide pace lagged behind national employment gains.
