Liebherr has reached a historic manufacturing milestone with the production and delivery of its 100,000th wheel loader, a landmark achievement that underscores the company’s long standing position in the global wheel loader market. The anniversary machine, a specially painted L 550 XPower, was officially handed over at Liebherr’s wheel loader competence center in Bischofshofen, Austria, to German recycling and environmental services company STORK Umweltdienste GmbH.
The delivery represents more than a production milestone. It highlights a partnership spanning more than three decades between Liebherr, STORK, and equipment dealer Kurt König, while also showcasing how customer feedback has influenced the development of some of Liebherr’s most important loader technologies.
100,000th Wheel Loader Delivered to Long Time Partner
The milestone machine is an L 550 XPower wheel loader finished in a custom dark blue STORK livery and featuring unique graphics designed specifically for the anniversary.
STORK has been operating Liebherr wheel loaders since 1994 and has steadily expanded its fleet over the years. Today, the company’s equipment fleet includes 46 Liebherr wheel loaders, 10 mobile excavators, six crawler excavators, two articulated dump trucks, and a telescopic handler.
According to Liebherr, the decision to deliver the 100,000th machine to STORK was intentional. The German company has played an important role not only as a customer but also as a development partner, helping evaluate and refine new wheel loader technologies under real world operating conditions.
STORK Helped Shape the XPower Platform
One of the most interesting aspects of the story dates back to 2015 when STORK operated a pre production XPower wheel loader prototype in a demanding recycling environment for several years.
The machine was tested under intensive loading and material handling conditions, providing Liebherr engineers with valuable operational data and direct customer feedback. Insights from those trials contributed to the development and optimization of the XPower generation that has since become one of Liebherr’s flagship wheel loader platforms.
This makes the selection of an L 550 XPower as the 100,000th machine particularly symbolic. The customer that helped validate the technology is now receiving the milestone loader.
Special Design Celebrates Wheel Loader History
The anniversary machine was designed to visually tell the story of Liebherr wheel loader development.
Its custom graphics feature a large “100,000” logo composed of historic black and white photographs documenting the evolution of Liebherr wheel loaders from the company’s earliest prototypes in the 1950s and 1960s through to today’s modern production machines.
Combined with the dark blue STORK color scheme, the machine stands out as one of the most distinctive wheel loaders ever produced by the Austrian factory.
Before entering service in Magdeburg, Germany, the machine will be displayed at IFAT, one of the world’s largest environmental technology exhibitions, where visitors will have an opportunity to see the milestone loader firsthand.
XPower Marks Its Own Anniversary
The delivery is particularly notable because the L 550 XPower belongs to a product family that is celebrating its own milestone in 2026.
Liebherr introduced the XPower wheel loader concept ten years ago, combining hydrostatic and mechanical drive systems into a powertrain designed to maximize fuel efficiency while maintaining high productivity.
The drivetrain automatically selects the most efficient power flow depending on operating conditions, helping reduce fuel consumption and component wear compared to traditional loader transmissions.
Over the last decade, XPower machines have become a key part of Liebherr’s wheel loader strategy across recycling, quarrying, construction, industrial material handling, and waste management sectors.
Future Technologies Already Under Development
While celebrating the 100,000th wheel loader, Liebherr is also preparing the next generation of loading technology.
At Bauma 2025, the company publicly demonstrated several future concepts including the autonomous wheel loader platform known as Liebherr Autonomous Operations and the hydrogen powered L 566 H wheel loader prototype.
Both projects reflect Liebherr’s technology neutral development strategy, where automation, alternative fuels, and advanced assistance systems are being developed simultaneously rather than relying on a single pathway toward lower emissions and higher productivity.
The milestone machine therefore serves as a bridge between Liebherr’s wheel loader heritage and the technologies that are expected to shape the next several decades of equipment development.
