Dutch engineering company Holland-Utrecht is preparing to bring one of the most ambitious electric tractor projects in Europe to market. The company has developed the HUE-Trac 620 Vario, a fully electric conversion of the new Fendt 600 Vario platform, targeting operators who want zero local emissions without sacrificing the familiar functionality of a modern premium tractor.
The first production machines are expected to be delivered at the end of 2026, with initial units reportedly already sold.
Electric Fendt 600 Vario Platform
Unlike many prototype electric tractors that are built from the ground up, the HUE-Trac 620 Vario starts life as a factory-built Fendt 600 Vario. Holland-Utrecht replaces the conventional diesel powertrain with a fully electric drivetrain while retaining much of the original tractor’s architecture and operator environment.
According to the company, the machine preserves key Fendt features:
- FendtONE operating system.
- Front linkage.
- Front PTO.
- Original cab and controls.
- Familiar vehicle layout for operators.
This approach could significantly reduce the learning curve for customers already operating Fendt fleets, allowing drivers to move between diesel and electric machines with minimal retraining.
400 kWh LFP Battery System
The centerpiece of the HUE-Trac 620 Vario is a 400 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack.
LFP chemistry has become increasingly popular in heavy-duty electric equipment due to several advantages:
- Longer cycle life.
- Improved thermal stability.
- Reduced fire risk compared to some alternative lithium chemistries.
- Lower degradation under intensive charging cycles.
Rather than concentrating all battery modules in one location, Holland-Utrecht distributes the battery packs throughout the tractor. This strategy is designed to maintain balanced weight distribution and preserve traction characteristics similar to those of the original diesel-powered machine.
The company claims the battery stores energy roughly equivalent to the usable energy contained in approximately 100 liters of diesel fuel.
Up to Eight Hours of Operation
Holland-Utrecht estimates operating times of up to eight hours on a single charge.
However, actual runtime will vary considerably depending on:
- Drawbar load.
- Soil conditions.
- PTO utilization.
- Hydraulic demand.
- Transport speed.
- Field topography.
For lighter transport, mowing, municipal work, or loader operations, achieving long operating shifts appears realistic. Heavy tillage and continuous high-load draft applications will naturally reduce operating duration.
This remains one of the central challenges facing large electric tractors: matching the energy density and refueling speed of diesel during peak seasonal workloads.
Fast Charging Capability
To reduce downtime, the HUE-Trac 620 Vario supports DC fast charging at up to 150 kW.
At that charging rate, operators could potentially restore a significant portion of battery capacity during breaks, shift changes, or overnight charging windows.
Fast charging infrastructure remains a critical factor for adoption. While many farms can install high-capacity electrical connections, widespread deployment of charging systems capable of supporting large agricultural equipment is still in its early stages across most agricultural regions.
Pricing and Production Plans
The company plans to build the first five production units by the end of 2026.
The announced starting price is approximately €625,000 net, positioning the tractor firmly in the premium segment.
While the acquisition cost is substantially higher than a comparable diesel tractor, the target market will likely consist of:
- Municipal operators.
- Public utility fleets.
- Sustainability-focused farms.
- Research institutions.
- Specialized agricultural businesses with access to renewable energy.
What This Means for Electric Agriculture
The HUE-Trac 620 Vario represents a more practical direction for agricultural electrification than many experimental concepts shown at trade fairs.
Rather than reinventing the tractor, Holland-Utrecht is leveraging an established and proven platform while preserving the features operators already know. That may ultimately prove more important than headline performance figures.
The biggest question is not whether the technology works. A 400 kWh battery and 150 kW charging system are technically feasible today. The real challenge is economics. At more than half a million euros, the tractor will need to demonstrate meaningful operational savings, regulatory advantages, or sustainability benefits to justify the investment.
Still, projects like the HUE-Trac 620 Vario provide an important glimpse into how premium agricultural machinery could evolve as battery technology improves and farms gain access to higher-capacity electrical infrastructure.
