Hitachi Construction Machinery Europe’s futuristic LANDCROS Mini concept excavator became one of the standout attractions at SaMoTer 2026 in Verona, Italy, after earning both the Design Award and a Technical Mention in the hydraulic excavator category.
Presented during the exhibition held from May 6 to May 9, the five tonne concept machine was developed as a vision of how future compact excavators could better serve operators through improved ergonomics, safety, and digital integration rather than simply focusing on higher performance specifications.
Based on the Hitachi ZX55U-6 Platform
Unlike many design studies that never move beyond styling exercises, the LANDCROS Mini is built on the proven Hitachi ZX55U-6 compact excavator platform.
Hitachi engineers used the project to explore how operator feedback could directly influence the next generation of compact construction equipment. Rather than redesigning the machine around technology for its own sake, the project focused on solving practical challenges faced by operators on real job sites.
According to Hitachi Construction Machinery Europe, the concept serves as a testing ground for future product development and customer driven innovation.
Safety Features Take Center Stage
One of the most notable innovations is the machine’s integrated safety system.
External sensors monitor the area around the excavator and automatically alert the operator when someone approaches. Instead of relying solely on audible warnings, the system changes the cab’s interior lighting to red, providing an immediate visual warning inside the operator environment.
The concept also introduces a true 360 degree visibility philosophy aimed at reducing blind spots around the machine.
Another subtle but practical improvement is the relocation of the front windscreen wiper motor to the right side of the cab, improving visibility to the left side of the machine where operators often need the clearest sightline when working in confined areas.
Designed Around Operator Comfort
The LANDCROS Mini places unusual emphasis on daily usability.
The cab features an integrated communication system with a built in microphone and speaker, allowing operators to communicate more effectively with workers outside the machine without opening windows or leaving the cab.
A sliding secondary display can accommodate third party software and digital tools without cluttering the workspace with additional monitors.
The machine also introduces several ergonomic improvements:
- Extended access handles and redesigned entry steps.
- Optimized joystick controls.
- Detachable travel levers that create additional legroom.
- Reduced operator fatigue during long working days.
Storage solutions have also been reimagined. Hitachi developed dedicated compartments known as the Backpack, Saddle, and Nest to store personal equipment, work gear, and daily essentials directly within the cab environment.
Operator Feedback Will Shape Future Machines
Perhaps the most important aspect of the project is that Hitachi actively invited operators attending SaMoTer to enter the cab, test the features, and evaluate the design.
The company says this feedback will directly influence engineering decisions for future LANDCROS compact machines and potentially future Hitachi excavator development programs.
This approach represents a growing trend within the construction equipment industry where manufacturers are increasingly involving end users earlier in the product development process.
Industry Perspective
The most interesting part of the LANDCROS Mini is not its futuristic appearance but the shift in development philosophy it represents.
For decades, excavator manufacturers competed primarily on digging force, hydraulic performance, and fuel efficiency. Those factors remain important, but modern operators increasingly expect automotive level ergonomics, digital connectivity, and improved workplace comfort.
The LANDCROS Mini suggests that future compact excavators may be judged as much by user experience as by traditional performance metrics. If even a portion of these concepts reaches production machines, the project could have a lasting influence on the compact equipment segment.
