Google Expands Its India-Born Agricultural AI APIs to Boost Precision Farming Across Asia-Pacific

Google is extending its agricultural AI solutions beyond India, opening access to its Agricultural Landscape Understanding (ALU) and Agricultural Monitoring and Event Detection (AMED) APIs for “trusted testers” in Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Japan.

Initially launched in India in late 2024, these APIs combine satellite imagery with machine learning to map fields, vegetation, and water resources while monitoring crop growth and harvest cycles. The AMED API delivers bi-weekly updates on crop conditions, enabling governments, startups, and researchers to track regional agricultural activity with near-real-time precision.

APIs Drive Local Innovation in Smart Farming and Policy Planning

According to Alok Talekar, Lead for Agriculture and Sustainability Research at Google DeepMind, these tools embody the company’s mission to enable data-driven decision-making across the agricultural value chain.

In India, they have already become an essential part of digital agriculture initiatives such as Krishi DSS, a decision-support system used by the Ministry of Agriculture. The APIs also power research projects led by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water, helping design income-support programs that reward climate-friendly crops.

Startups are leveraging the technology to deliver climate-smart advisory services to more than 10 million farmers, improve resource allocation, and facilitate access to rural financing.

The expansion marks a strategic step for Google in promoting AI-driven sustainability across Asia-Pacific, positioning its agricultural APIs as foundational tools for future-ready farm management.
