A large convoy of tractors is expected to significantly slow traffic across Suffolk on Monday, as farmers from multiple counties unite to protest proposed changes to inheritance tax and broader pressures on the agricultural sector. Suffolk Police have released full route details in advance to help motorists avoid severe disruption similar to last year’s demonstration.
Organizers from East Anglia Farmers Unite say more than 100 tractors are expected to join the convoy, making this one of the region’s largest coordinated farmer protests in recent years.
Why Farmers Are Protesting Tax and Policy Changes
The demonstration reflects growing frustration among U.K. farmers who argue that rising operational costs, uncertain future subsidy structures, and proposed modifications to agricultural inheritance rules threaten the long-term viability of family farms.
Many producers say inheritance tax adjustments could force families to sell or break up farmland in order to meet financial obligations. Others highlight concerns about tightening environmental requirements, declining margins, global market volatility, and labor shortages.
The protest is designed to draw nationwide attention by strategically creating a high-visibility slowdown along one of East Anglia’s busiest corridors. Leaders emphasize that the action is peaceful and aims to pressure policymakers to reconsider the proposed tax changes.
Full Police Released Route Details for Motorists
Suffolk Police say they are coordinating with organizers to ensure the demonstration proceeds safely. Officers warn that delays are inevitable, as tractors will travel at approximately 20 mph in lane two of the A14 to allow other traffic to merge and exit.
Planned Convoy Route
- The convoy will depart Wherstead village at 10:00, moving along the A137 into Ipswich.
- It will proceed via Wherstead Road, Hawes Street, Vernon Street, then continue through Bridge Street and over Stoke Bridge.
- At the Novotel roundabout, drivers will turn into Star Lane, reach Grimwade Street, and move on to Fore Street.
- The route continues via Duke Street, Cliff Road, Toller Road, Landseer Road, and Nacton Road.
- Tractors will join the A14 eastbound at junction 57, heading toward the Port of Felixstowe.
- After looping around the Dock Gate 1 roundabout, the convoy will return westbound toward Wherstead.
- Protesters will continue repeated loops between junction 56 and Dock Gate 1 until the demonstration concludes at 16:00.
Police advise drivers to use alternative routes where possible.
