Case IH has officially introduced an all new generation of Puma tractors, bringing one of the company’s most comprehensive updates in recent years to the important 150 to 200 hp segment. Beyond a refreshed design, the new Puma family receives an entirely new transmission option, significantly upgraded hydraulics, higher payload capacity, advanced operator technology, and improved precision farming capabilities. The new lineup is designed to meet the growing demands of professional mixed farms, contractors, and large scale crop producers seeking higher productivity without sacrificing maneuverability.
Three models with multiple transmission options
The new Puma family consists of three models: Puma 155, Puma 165, and Puma 185. Each model’s designation corresponds to its rated engine horsepower, following Case IH’s long established naming strategy.
Customers can choose from three transmission configurations depending on their application.
The proven ActiveDrive 6 semi powershift transmission remains available for the Puma 155 and Puma 165. Although familiar from the previous generation, the gearbox has been strengthened internally to accommodate the higher engine output and increased durability requirements.
The biggest technical innovation is the introduction of the completely new ActiveDrive 8 dual clutch transmission. Unlike conventional semi powershift gearboxes, ActiveDrive 8 provides eight powershift speeds within each of its three mechanical ranges while using overlapping gear ratios. In practical field operation this greatly reduces the need to change ranges, allowing uninterrupted torque delivery and smoother acceleration under varying loads.
For operators preferring continuously variable drivetrains, Case IH continues offering the CVX continuously variable transmission, with customer deliveries beginning first for CVX equipped machines.
6.7 liter FPT engine delivers more than 1,000 Nm
Power comes from the latest generation FPT six cylinder engine with a displacement of 6.7 liters. Although based on a proven platform, the engine has undergone extensive updates focused on efficiency, emissions compliance, and improved power management.
The flagship Puma 185 develops more than 1,000 Nm of peak torque, providing strong pulling performance for heavy tillage, planting, transport, and PTO intensive applications.
The engine management system automatically switches between multiple operating modes depending on workload. Standard power is available during normal operation, while additional engine output is activated automatically during demanding PTO work, hydraulic applications, and certain transport situations where higher performance can safely be utilized.
Case IH also emphasizes fuel efficiency. According to the manufacturer, the new ActiveDrive 8 transmission was specifically optimized alongside the engine and validated through independent DLG performance testing to improve overall operating efficiency.
Hydraulics reach up to 170 liters per minute
Hydraulic capability has received a major upgrade across the entire Puma lineup.
Every tractor now uses a closed center load sensing hydraulic system that supplies oil flow only when demanded, reducing parasitic power losses while improving fuel economy.
Two pump configurations are available:
- 150 L/min standard hydraulic flow
- 170 L/min high capacity hydraulic system
Rear remote valves can be configured with either mechanical or electronic control. Operators selecting electronic valves receive up to five rear remotes, while front mounted hydraulic functions for loaders and front hitches are controlled electronically through a configurable multifunction joystick.
Rear lift capacity increases to 7 tons
One of the most important mechanical upgrades is the completely redesigned rear linkage.
Maximum rear hitch lift capacity now reaches 7,000 kg, allowing operators to work with larger cultivators, seed drills, planters, and combination implements that previously required heavier tractors.
The tractor’s legal gross vehicle weight has also increased substantially to 13.5 tonnes, giving operators significantly greater transport flexibility while remaining compliant with road regulations.
Compact chassis improves maneuverability
Despite higher carrying capacity, the new Puma retains compact overall dimensions that remain particularly attractive for European farms.
The wheelbase measures just under 2.8 meters while short front and rear overhangs contribute to excellent visibility and handling. Case IH reports a turning radius well below 11 meters under optimal configuration, making the tractor suitable for both field work and confined farmyard operations.
A redesigned suspended front axle introduces dual cylinder damping together with integrated roll control technology. At transport speeds the system improves stability during cornering, while in field conditions it enhances traction by maintaining more consistent tire contact with the ground.
Cab technology moves closer to flagship tractors
The operator environment receives one of the largest upgrades in the new generation.
Customers can choose between two armrest layouts, including the latest MultiController interface shared with larger Optum, Magnum, Quadtrac, and Steiger tractors. This creates a consistent operating experience across nearly the entire Case IH tractor lineup.
The latest Pro 1200 touchscreen display is now available throughout the Puma range. A single monitor manages tractor settings, automatic guidance, ISOBUS implement control, cameras, and machine functions, while an optional dual display configuration provides dedicated guidance and implement management.
Operator comfort has also been enhanced through three cab suspension options, automatic climate control, redesigned seating, improved cab access, integrated tool storage, an optional refrigerated compartment, and LED lighting producing up to 55,000 lumens for nighttime operation.
Precision farming and connectivity become standard
The new Puma family incorporates Case IH’s newest precision agriculture technologies.
Optional GNSS guidance supports steering accuracy down to approximately 1.5 cm when used with RTK correction services. Automated headland management now coordinates both tractor functions and compatible implements, reducing operator workload while improving operational consistency.
Customers can also specify ISOBUS Class 3 with TIM technology, allowing compatible implements to automatically control tractor speed, hydraulics, PTO operation, and additional vehicle functions during field work.
Perhaps the most notable digital upgrade is Case IH’s new connectivity policy. Every new Puma includes lifetime integrated telematics connectivity with no recurring subscription required for the onboard modem. According to the company, purchasing a new Puma can also extend lifetime connectivity benefits to other compatible Case IH machines already operating within the customer’s fleet, significantly lowering long term ownership costs.
