HudsonAlpha Wiregrass has introduced the START Ag Entrepreneurship Program — an initiative designed to help Alabama high school students transform scientific ideas into practical agricultural solutions. START, which stands for Students Transforming Agriculture through Research and Technology, aims to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world ag-tech innovation.
Backed by Alabama Power, Wiregrass RC&D, and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, the program will roll out this fall across Geneva County and Geneva City Schools.
Hands-On Learning for Tomorrow’s Ag-Tech Entrepreneurs
START engages 9th–12th grade FFA students in a competitive, project-based experience where they form teams, develop agribusiness ideas, and receive guidance from mentors in both agriculture and entrepreneurship.
The initiative unfolds in several stages:
- Oct. 21: Phase I assignments presented.
- Nov. 4: Launch presentations; 15–20 teams move forward.
- Nov. 14: Deadline for Phase II submissions.
- Nov. 19: Review and selection for Phase III.
- Dec. 10: Two top teams per school earn $300 seed funding and mentorship.
- Mar. 18: START Agriculture Innovation Challenge — the final showcase event.
Building Alabama’s Ag-Tech Ecosystem
HudsonAlpha Wiregrass leaders envision START as a foundation for a stronger ag-tech ecosystem in the Wiregrass region. By connecting research, education, and business development, the program helps students see how biotechnology, automation, and data science can make agriculture more sustainable and profitable.
“The future of agriculture isn’t just coming — it’s growing here in the Wiregrass,” the organization said in a statement.
