AgXeed has expanded its automation portfolio with the introduction of the Vehicle Control Unit (VCU), a retrofit system designed to transform compatible conventional tractors into highly automated field machines. Rather than replacing existing equipment, the new hardware allows farmers to integrate their current fleet into AgXeed’s TraXwise planning and fleet management ecosystem using the ISOBUS TIM communication standard.
Initially entering a limited commercial rollout during 2026, the VCU is expected to become widely available in 2027.
ISOBUS TIM Automation Platform
Unlike many retrofit autonomy solutions that primarily focus on steering, AgXeed’s VCU aims to automate the complete field operation.
Installed on the tractor roof, the compact controller communicates with the tractor through ISOBUS TIM (Tractor Implement Management) and connects to the TraXwise cloud platform, where operators can prepare complete field missions before entering the field.
Routes, headland sequences, implement actions, turning patterns, working speeds, and field specific guidance lines can all be created digitally and transmitted directly to the machine. During operation, execution data is returned to TraXwise in real time, allowing managers to monitor progress remotely.
One particularly useful capability is the ability to create highly customized guidance patterns for specialty crops. Vegetable producers working with irregular bed layouts can define every pass months in advance, minimizing overlap and reducing field preparation time during planting season.
Supported Tractor Functions
Provided the tractor supports the necessary ISOBUS TIM functions, the VCU can control multiple vehicle systems simultaneously, including:
- Steering.
- Ground speed.
- Front and rear hitch position.
- Front and rear PTO.
- Hydraulic remote valves.
Implements remain connected through the standard ISOBUS architecture, allowing existing TIM compatible implements to continue operating normally. If an implement offers TIM functions not currently supported by the VCU, those individual features simply remain inactive without affecting the rest of the operation.
This standards based approach makes the system largely brand independent rather than locking customers into a single tractor manufacturer.
RTK Navigation and Autonomous Field Operation
Vehicle navigation relies on RTK corrected GNSS, enabling accurate tracking of guidance lines generated inside TraXwise.
The system supports:
- Autonomous forward driving.
- Automated headland turns.
- Implement sequence automation.
- Working speeds from 0 to 20 km/h.
- Autonomous reverse driving in certain situations.
Reverse maneuvers with trailed implements still require manual operation, which reflects one of today’s remaining technical limitations for retrofit autonomous systems.
To improve operational reliability, AgXeed includes an RTK fallback function capable of maintaining positioning accuracy for approximately 8 to 10 minutes if satellite correction data is temporarily interrupted. If communication between the VCU and the tractor is lost entirely, the machine automatically stops.
Although remote monitoring is available, the platform currently does not allow one operator to supervise multiple autonomous tractors simultaneously. However, jobs can already be planned centrally and dispatched to several machines at once.
Portable Retrofit Design
One of the VCU’s strongest commercial advantages is its portability.
After the initial installation and calibration, the roof mounted unit can be removed simply by disconnecting the wiring harness and lifting it from its mounting bracket. This allows a single VCU to be shared between multiple compatible tractors, reducing investment costs for farms that do not require every machine to operate autonomously at the same time.
The first installation is more involved because the GNSS antenna must be positioned correctly, steering geometry calibrated, turning radius configured, and cab wiring installed. Subsequent transfers are significantly quicker.
Pricing and Availability
AgXeed has announced a launch price of €12,500 (approximately US$14,200 at late June 2026 exchange rates).
The package includes:
- Vehicle Control Unit.
- One year of RTK correction service.
- Mobile data connectivity.
- TraXwise software subscription.
After the first year, ongoing software and service costs are €1,300 annually.
Commercial deployment is currently focused on Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Australia, Ukraine, Canada, and the United States.
Industry Perspective
The VCU represents a practical shift in agricultural automation strategy. Rather than asking growers to purchase entirely new autonomous tractors, AgXeed is extending automation to machines many farms already own.
The decision to build around the open ISOBUS TIM standard is particularly significant. If wider tractor manufacturer support continues to improve, retrofit platforms like the VCU could lower the barrier to adopting advanced automation while preserving existing fleet investments. For many professional farming operations, this approach is likely to deliver a faster return on investment than purchasing dedicated autonomous vehicles.
The current requirement for an operator to remain inside the cab means the VCU should be viewed as a highly automated driving assistant rather than a fully autonomous tractor. However, AgXeed has already indicated that additional functionality is planned as future versions of the ISOBUS TIM standard evolve toward supporting higher levels of vehicle autonomy.
