One of the loudest events on the 2026 N.C. State Fair schedule will return to Raleigh this October, with the United Pullers of the Carolinas Tractor Pull scheduled for four sessions from October 16 through October 18 at the NC Education Lottery Sam G. Rand Grandstand.
The three-day program begins Friday evening, continues with two separate sessions on Saturday and concludes Sunday afternoon. Tickets for each tractor pull session are priced at $10, although admission to the N.C. State Fair must be purchased separately. Children age 5 and younger can attend the pull for free.
The timing also makes the tractor pull one of the first major motorsports attractions of the 2026 fair, which runs October 15-25 in Raleigh. Last year’s N.C. State Fair attracted 946,811 visitors during its 11-day run, illustrating the scale of the audience surrounding an event that might otherwise be considered a specialized motorsport.
Four Tractor Pull Sessions
The 2026 schedule includes:
- Friday, October 16 at 6 p.m.
- Saturday, October 17 at noon
- Saturday, October 17 at 6 p.m.
- Sunday, October 18 at 1 p.m.
Each session will take place at the NC Education Lottery Sam G. Rand Grandstand. Capacity is limited to 2,500 spectators per show, and fair organizers are recommending advance ticket purchases for anyone who wants a guaranteed seat.
That limited capacity is important. A tractor pull may be surrounded by an event drawing close to one million people, but the grandstand remains a relatively intimate venue. Once 2,500 spectators are inside, that particular session is effectively full.
Why This Pull Is Worth Seeing
For anyone familiar only with agricultural tractors, a professional pulling event is an entirely different experience.
The basic competition is easy to understand. A modified tractor or truck attempts to drag a weight-transfer sled as far as possible along a dirt track. As the machine advances, the sled progressively increases resistance, turning what initially looks like a straightforward acceleration run into a battle for traction, engine power and setup. The longest distance wins.
But the appeal is less about understanding every technical rule and more about seeing what happens when engines, tires, chassis setup and track conditions are pushed toward their limits.
From a machinery perspective, tractor pulling is especially interesting because spectators can actually see mechanical decisions producing immediate results. Tire bite, wheel speed, weight distribution and the driver’s ability to keep the machine moving straight can separate a strong run from one that ends unexpectedly early.
That makes the sport unusually accessible. A newcomer does not need to follow a season-long championship to recognize a good pull.
And unlike watching the same machines through a screen, the combination of exhaust, engine sound, dirt movement and physical vibration is a major part of the attraction. Tractor pulling is one of those motorsports where being beside the track changes the experience substantially.
UPOC and NTPA Competition
The event is presented by United Pullers of the Carolinas, commonly known as UPOC.
UPOC operates professional truck and tractor pulling competition in the Carolinas and is sanctioned under the National Tractor Pullers Association and World Pulling International structure. Its roots trace back to North Carolina pulling organizations active since 1974.
The NTPA currently lists UPOC as one of its member-state organizations and recognizes a broad range of UPOC competition categories, including Heavy Super Stock, Super Farm, Pro Farm, Light Pro Stock, Two-Wheel-Drive Trucks, Four-Wheel-Drive Trucks, diesel 4×4 classes and Modified Minis.
That range is one reason the State Fair pull is more interesting than a demonstration-style tractor event. These are purpose-built competition machines from an established pulling series, not restored farm tractors making exhibition runs.
The NTPA and UPOC have also worked with the North Carolina State Fair on previous editions of the State Fair Southern Showdown, using the same four-session Friday through Sunday format.
A Strong Match for the State Fair
The tractor pull fits the N.C. State Fair particularly well because it connects two audiences that do not always overlap.
For agricultural visitors, there is still a recognizable connection to tractors, diesel engines and machinery culture. For motorsports fans, the attraction is horsepower, noise and competition. For families who may never attend a dedicated pulling event, the fair provides an easy opportunity to see the sport without planning an entire trip around it.
That crossover may be the strongest reason to put the event on the schedule.
A dedicated tractor pulling fan probably already understands what is happening on the track. The more interesting audience is the person who comes to the fair for agriculture, food or rides and decides to spend $10 on a grandstand ticket. Four sessions spread across three days make that relatively easy to do.
And with only 2,500 seats available per session, this remains a comparatively small live event inside one of North Carolina’s biggest annual public gatherings.
About N.C. State Fair
The N.C. State Fair is organized by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and remains one of the state’s largest annual public events.
The 2026 edition runs for 11 days, from October 15 through October 25. The previous fair drew 946,811 visitors, giving some perspective on the scale of the operation surrounding the tractor pull.
General admission for 2026 is $13 for adults ages 13-64 at regular gate pricing, while discounted advance adult admission is available for $10. Youth ages 6-12 pay $7 at the gate, and children age 5 and younger receive free fair admission. Tractor Pull admission is an additional $10 per session.
