Yanmar Brand Origins

The name “Yanmar” derives from a type of dragonfly called “yanma” in Japanese. Magokichi chose this name because dragonflies are beneficial to rice farmers, eating pests that damage crops. The company adopted this identity to represent its commitment to supporting agriculture.

The Founding Years (1912-1930s)

Magokichi Yamaoka was born on March 22, 1888, in Minami Tominaga village, Shiga, Japan. He was the ninth of ten children. Magokichi developed an oil engine that became the foundation of Yanmar’s business, which he established in 1912.
After the oil engine, Magokichi created agricultural equipment including the rice huller. The business experienced financial difficulties despite initial success. During this period, Magokichi encountered the diesel engine, which changed the company’s trajectory.

Post-War Recovery and Expansion (1945-1960s)

After World War II, Magokichi’s diesel engine contributed to Japan’s recovery. The company shifted focus to diesel technology and agricultural mechanization. In 1961, Yanmar started its agricultural equipment division.

Entry into Tractors (1966-1980s)

Yanmar produced its first tractor, the YM160, in 1966 with 10 hp. The company expanded the tractor line throughout the 1970s with models ranging from 11 hp (YM1100, 1977) to 60 hp (YM6000, 1980).
In the early 1980s, Yanmar began manufacturing utility tractors for John Deere. The F-series launched in 1983, including models from the F13D (12 hp) to the F97 (97 hp). The FX-series also debuted in 1983 with similar power ranges.

Product Diversification (1990s-2000s)

The 1990s saw multiple series introductions: the AF-series (1992), FV-series (1991), and F-series updates. By 1992, Yanmar offered compact tractors from 14 hp to larger models exceeding 40 hp.
The 2000s brought the AF hundred-series (2001-2005) and EF-series (2002-2009). Models ranged from 10 hp (AC-10) to 90 hp (AF890). The company produced both two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive variants.

Partnership Changes (2006-2011)

In 2006, Yanmar partnered with MTD to market compact tractors under the Cub Cadet Yanmar brand in North America. This arrangement ended in 2011, and Yanmar America became the sole distributor.

Modern Era (2012-Present)

Yanmar introduced the Ex, Lx, Sx, and SA series in 2012. The SA-series continues production with models like the SA222 (2025) and SA223 (2022). In 2016, the YT-series launched with the YT235, YT347, and YT359. The latest additions are the YM347 (47 hp) and YM359 (58 hp) from 2023.
Current production focuses on compact and mid-size tractors from 21 hp to 59 hp. Yanmar continues to supply engines for John Deere utility tractors.
