Valtra’s history begins in 1832 when Johan Theofron Munktell established the mechanical workshop “Eskilstuna Mekaniska Werkstad” in Sweden. This marks the beginning of the industrial history of both Valtra and Volvo Construction.
The Finnish connection started in 1926 when the government of Finland established a rifle factory in Tourula, on the northeast edge of Jyväskylä. After completing war reparations alongside other Finnish industrial plants, the factory needed civilian products. The first Valmet tractors were assembled at the Tourula factory in 1951. This date marks the birth of Valmet and Valtra brand tractors.
The name Valmet originated as an abbreviation of “VALtion METallitehtaat” (State Metal Works), adopted in 1951 when the first tractor was produced.
