Harvest seasons don’t wait. Planting windows close within days, weather shifts without warning, and 20-hour shifts have become routine during peak periods across Europe and North America. Under those conditions, a tractor’s lighting system stops being an accessory and starts being something operators actually depend on.
Each major manufacturer now sells a proprietary branded package. This piece breaks down what those systems actually deliver — and where the differences matter in the field.

Fendt UltraVision 360°

On the Vario 700 and 900 series, UltraVision 360° goes after the top of the lumen count race — and largely gets there. Up to 36 individual LED units, full perimeter roof coverage, and side fender lights that deal with the shadow zones around the front axle that tend to trip up competing systems.
RowFinder is the feature that stands apart from the rest of this comparison. Two downward-angled LEDs at the front fender light up the crop row edges ahead of the front wheels, giving operators a physical reference for guidance during nighttime row-crop work. In certain conditions it reduces the need for camera-based assist systems entirely.
Hitch area lighting uses dedicated rear downlights aimed at the three-point linkage zone — connecting implements at night without a separate portable light becomes straightforward rather than a two-person job.
Zone switching happens individually through the CommandPad or the multifunction armrest. Road transport mode deactivates roof lights without cutting work area illumination.
One limitation: the system is built so tightly into the Fendt cab architecture that retrofitting it to older Vario models is genuinely difficult, not just inconvenient.

Valtra Work Pro

Valtra took a different path. Instead of chasing LED counts, Work Pro focuses on three primary zones — forward work area, rear work area, and transport — and makes the package configurable at the factory order stage. Buyers pick which zones to include. That modularity affects the purchase price in ways the other three packages don’t allow.
Peak output sits around 90,000 lumens, which puts it behind the field. The raw number is lower, but Valtra’s rear work lights are mounted higher on the cab rear panel rather than at hood level, producing a wider flood pattern behind the tractor. For slurry spreading or rear-mounted implement work, some operators actually prefer this to a more concentrated beam.
No RowFinder equivalent exists in this package. Side fender coverage is limited compared to the other three. For operations that stay away from row-crop night work, those absences don’t bite — for operations that don’t, they will.

CLAAS LED Premium

Across the AXION 900 and 960 series, LED Premium reaches around 110,000 lumens from up to 32 LEDs. Where CLAAS spent its engineering effort is on the roof light bar geometry. The perimeter layout is designed specifically to eliminate shadow zones that the cab structure itself creates — dead spots behind the rear pillars show up in several competitor configurations and CLAAS clearly targeted them here.
There’s no RowFinder equivalent. Row-crop operators running at night will notice that gap.
The system’s specific strength is implement compatibility. CLAAS built connection points for its own CONVIO FLEX and VARIO cutter bars so that implement lighting runs through the same cab panel as the tractor zones. Preset groups — “road transport,” “field work,” “loading” — can be saved through the CEMIS 1200 terminal, which reduces the number of manual zone adjustments during a typical working day.
One thing to note: LED Premium is not offered on the AXION 800 series. Operators in the mid-horsepower range looking at CLAAS won’t find this package as an option.

John Deere 360° LED Lighting Package

The 360° package on the 7R, 8R, and 9R runs up to 30 LEDs at roughly 105,000 lumens. What separates it from the others is less about light count and more about what the system does on its own. Through the CommandCenter display, lighting zones can be tied to machine states — transport mode switches off the field work beams and activates road lights automatically. That transition, repeated dozens of times during a long day, is one less thing the operator has to think about.
RowFinder is available as an add-on to the base 360° package rather than included. The upside is cost flexibility; the downside is that the full row-crop capable configuration costs more than the headline package price suggests.
Rear hitch lighting uses a two-tier setup — lower frame rail LEDs for close-in linkage coverage, plus cab rear panel floods for a wider zone. Other systems in this comparison generally don’t replicate that split approach at the same configuration level.

Tractor Lighting Systems: Strengths and Weaknesses

Total lumen output

Fendt at ~120,000 lm is out front. CLAAS and John Deere run close behind at 110,000 and 105,000 respectively. Valtra comes in at ~90,000 lm. That said, beam pattern efficiency matters — a well-directed lower-lumen system can cover more useful ground at a given work distance than a higher-lumen system pointed in the wrong direction.

Two systems offer this: Fendt as standard, John Deere as an optional add-on. CLAAS and Valtra don’t have an equivalent. For corn, sunflower, or sugar beet work after dark, this is the comparison’s single most differentiating feature.

Implement and hitch illumination

All four systems include hitch lighting. CLAAS leads on implement integration for operators running CLAAS headers — the cab-panel control compatibility is a practical time-saver. John Deere’s two-tier rear approach covers the most area outright.

Zone control granularity

Fendt and CLAAS both offer individual zone switching. John Deere adds the automation layer on top of that. Valtra’s group-based control is coarser, though the factory-order modularity means operators aren’t paying for zones they won’t use.

The right system depends almost entirely on what kind of work it’s doing and in what conditions.
